Uniting, Organizing, Empowering Members

Members - Active

Active membership in the Kentucky Education Association is open to any person who is actively engaged in educational work in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; who is on limited leave of absence from education work; or who is serving as an executive officer of the Association or of a local affiliate. Active members who have been discharged may continue to hold active membership for as long as a legal challenge to such discharge is pending. Active membership includes certified and education support professional employees.

Where required, active members must hold, or be eligible to hold, a regular legal certificate or permit. Active membership is limited to persons who support the Purposes, Goals, and Objectives of KEA and maintain active membership in the National Education Association and a local KEA affiliate where eligible.

Active members receive association publications; may vote; run for elective office and hold appointive positions in the Association; are eligible for legal assistance and the Educators Employment Liability Program; may use Member Benefit services; and may participate in other association programs and benefits.

KEA dues are determined by the KEA Delegate Assembly. NEA dues are determined by the NEA Representative Assembly. Local association dues are determined by each local association.

Certified active membership provides former members of the NEA/KEA Student Program discounted dues during their first year of eligibility of teaching. By choosing that category, they are entitled to a 50% discount on KEA dues and to receive information about an NEA dues rebate of $10 per year of student membership, up to $40 for four years.

Ethnic Status
NEA is committed to assuring equitable representation of members of ethnic minority groups at all governance levels of the Association. NEA Bylaw 12-1(h) states: "Ethnic minority shall mean those persons designated as ethnic minority by statistics published by the United States Bureau of the Census. This designation shall specifically include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, Black\African-American, and Hispanic." In order to facilitate achievement of the goal of minority involvement, if you are a member of any of these groups, please check the appropriate box. Ethnic minority information is optional. Failure to provide it will in no way affect your membership status, rights or benefits in NEA, KEA, or any of their affiliates. This information will be kept confidential.
